Who We Are:
Dakota Kids, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, was created to reduce and prevent the growing epidemic of
childhood obesity. The Dakota Kids program offers a 6 or 12 week program where the students will meet 1 or 2 times per
week for about an hour. We focus on teaching our students "life skills". Each class involves interactive learning,
teaching children the basics of nutrition, exercise, teamwork, and building self-esteem through goal setting.
Our Mission:
With over 33% of children being either
overweight or obese in South Dakota, Dakota
Kids, Inc. was created and designed to educate
children on the basics of health, nutrition, and
exercise. Our 12-week program offers a unique,
interactive approach that is designed to
increase the child’s knowledge on health,
nutrition, and exercise and build their self
esteem. Dakota Kids believes that through its
passion to help children and their families and
to create a program that is effective on a
long-term basis, it can dramatically reduce the
number of children who are overweight and
obese...one family at a time.
Current Problem:
Childhood obesity is a serious medical condition that
affects children and adolescents. It occurs when a child is
well above the normal weight for his or her age and height.
Childhood obesity is particularly troubling because the
extra pounds often start kids on the path to health problems
that were once confined to adults, such as diabetes, high
blood pressure, and high cholesterol.
Social Emotional Fallout Due to Childhood Obesity:
• Low Self-Esteem and Bullying
• Behavior and Learning Problems
• Depression
Health Complications Associated with Childhood Obesity:
• Type 2 diabetes
• Metabolic syndrome
• Asthma and other respiratory problems
• High blood pressure
• Sleep disorders
• Liver disease
• Early puberty or menarche
• Eating disorders
• Skin infections
